Genre Research

Thriller films are less broad in terms of definition than other genre's, such as Drama, but can be linked with others to create subgenre's, for instance a crime thriller or psychological thriller. Certain directors (Alfred Hitchcock, and more recently Christopher Nolan) are renowned for their thriller films, such as Psycho, Rear Window (Hitchcock), Memento and Inception (Nolan).

A thriller film is one that is defined as creating excitement, suspense, and thrilling the audience. They will normally be difficult to work out, often having a twist at the end and deal with some kind of issue regarding the mind. For instance Nolan's Memento features a man who is constantly hunting for a 'John G.', who he believes murdered his wife. The protagonist has a type of amnesia, and writes things down on photographs, but at the end we find out that he killed the man a year and a half ago, and that he has killed several 'John G's, because he forgets events a few minutes after they happen. The narrative structure of the film is different in this film which links in with Teddy's condition.

Another thriller, Shutter Island, features a CIA operative trying to find a missing patient at a mental hospital, but it is only at the end we discover their true identity. The director, Martin Scorsese, uses camera tricks and subtle hints to point to the finale's revelation
